Astronaut Scott Kelly and Cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko are both spending one year in space. That is twice as long as the typical mission. Their collaborative efforts will help gain further insight into what happens to astronauts during long-duration spaceflight. This sort of research is the beginning to finding out how to successfully execute a mission to Mars.
