Both businesses bring a unique and Detroit-centric approach. The Wheelhouse offers rentals, bikes and bike accessory retail as well as excellent guided tours of Detroit by bike. Detroit bikes opened this year. They took over abandoned manufacturing space on the west side and now design and build their A-type bicycle right here in the city.
The A-type is a true expression of Motor City style. Unpretentious, simple, minimalist and durable. A user-friendly bike with 3 speeds, painted matte black, it is designed with the everyday commuter in mind.
For those of you who enjoy a few more bells and whistles (literally) The Wheelhouse will be offering an upgraded “A+” edition that includes American-made lights, lock, bottle cage and a bell to let pedestrians know that you are coming in hot. The basic A Type retails for $550 and its fancier sister for $700. There will also be a selection of other bikes available for purchase.
“We are excited to extend the cycling season with this unique collaboration between a retailer, manufacturer and a neighborhood development agency,” says Wheelhouse co-owner Karen Gage. “Eastern Market is the perfect place to showcase the best in American-made and locally sourced bikes and bicycle products.”
The Wheelhouse riverfront location will close for the season on the 25th.
Just outside of Shed 4, on the corner of Russell and Division you can find the new outlet in a shipping container. They will be open Friday and Monday 11 a.m to 6 p.m. Saturday 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. There will also be bike shop standards like rental and drop-off repair service. Eastern Market just gained another reason to visit, if you needed any more.
