This Friday, you can watch 20 of skateboarding’s best athletes square off in a never before seen competition. Hart Plaza, as we speak is being turned into a skate park.
The contest comes from the mind of one of the sport’s most dynamic characters, Ryan Sheckler. He started skateboarding before he can remember, has been a pro for almost two decades, and you may recognize him from an MTV reality show called Life of Ryan.
Red Bull Hart Lines is looking to produce a high energy, high impact skateboard event, featuring a brand new, innovative format. The course itself is a mix of everything that makes street skating exciting. Its a combination of existing features like stairs, rails and ledges, then California RampWorks has added new obstacles throughout the course.
Each athlete will be required to skate each lane once, then for their third run, the athlete can select either lane to better their score. The top score from each lane will then be averaged to determine the skater’s overall score. In other competitions, a skater can go back and try a feature over again, not in Hart Lines, its continuous, each pro has only one chance on each element as they go through.
“This is a start to finish contest, including an element of speed, with a very unique course design that allows each skater to express themselves,” adds event creator and competitor Ryan Sheckler. “If I had to explain the contest and skateboarding in one word, it would be ‘fun’ and that’s what I am going for.”
Sheckler was looking for a place to set up his new contest and Detroit seemed like the logical choice. A place where the street runs head on into innovation.
“Detroit is an amazing city with a rich history. Skateboarding has passion and I want to use that to impact the Midwest and skate scene as a whole,” Sheckler said.
The competition takes place over two days, with qualifiers happening on Friday between 2-5pm, and the finals running on Saturday between 2-5pm. The plaza opens at 1pm both days for spectators of all ages to come and cheer on their heroes, and the event is free and open to the public.
